Peace Actors in South Sudan Launch Activities to Commemorate International Day of Peace

Sep 14, 2016

JUBA — Peace actors from a wide-ranging coalition of civil society, international, and government organizations will host seven days of peace activities in commemoration of International Day of Peace. The activities begin today and will culminate in a march to the marquee ceremony in Juba on 21 September.

This year the International Day of Peace will be celebrated in South Sudan by the national theme “Together We Can Heal The Nation”, as a call for every citizen to imagine, commit, and actively contribute to the vision of sustainable peace for South Sudan.

“International Day of Peace for us is about continuously highlighting the horror and cost of the conflict in South Sudan, shining a light on some success stories; securing strong commitment from all relevant stakeholders, establishing common targets and embarking on an irreversible march towards peace,” said Chairperson of the South Sudan Peace and Reconciliation Commission Chuol Rambang.

The convening activities kick off on 14 September with a media meet-and-greet to introduce peace coalition organizations and illustrate the goals and objectives of the peace campaign. Radio programs will run throughout the week highlighting peace messages. The commemoration of International Day of Peace will take place at Nyakuron Cultural Centre on 21 September 2016 from 7:00-13:00.

The coalition is led by the South Sudan Peace and Reconciliation Commission, in coordination with the National Platform for Peace and Reconciliation, as well as partner national and local organizations, the United Nations, diplomatic missions, and the business community. The coalition includes Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), Liwolo Women Development Association (LWDA), Dak Organization for Recovery and Development (DORD), Solidarity for Women Rights Association (SOWA), Eve-Organization for Women (EVE), Organization for Non-Violence and Development (ONAD), United Cultural Development Organization (UCDC), United Friends Association (UFA), Community Initiative for Peace and Development (CIPAD), ACCORD, Grassroots Women Network, Unity Cultural and Development Center, Juba University, youth and women-led local groups, UNDP, UNMISS and more.

Each year the International Day of Peace is observed on 21 September 2016. This year’s international theme is “The Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace.”

In South Sudan, International Day of Peace will mark the beginning of a longer-term effort amongst civil society, international, and government organizations to promote peace and stability, as part of the 100 Days of Peace Activism mobilization.
