Community Security Roundtable and Report Launch

Jul 19, 2012

Key finding from community consultations on security in five states to be presented

17 July 2012 – Juba The Launch of five Community Consultation reports and the Roundtable Discussion on Community Security in South Sudan will be held on Friday 20 July at the UNDP Compound.

These five reports are based on consultations with communities in Eastern Equatoria, Lakes, Unity, Upper Nile and Warrap States, which were led by the Bureau for Community Security and Small Arms Control (BCSSAC) and the Peace Commission, with technical support from UNDP and financial support from Canada, the UK Department for International Development (DFID), the European Union, the Netherlands and other donors. These reports document community perceptions on root causes of violent conflict, the needs of individual communities, and community-identified proposals for conflict mitigation.

As a result of these findings the UNDP CSAC project and the South Sudan Recovery Fund (SSRF) in partnership with state and local governments, supported the implementation of conflict-sensitive development projects based on the key priorities identified during the consultation process and have already had a tangible impact. This process is unique as it empowers people to find local solutions to their security issues while extending the state’s authority

Following the presentation of this innovative approach, key findings and lessons learned, will be a broader discussion on community security and conflict mitigation with representatives from the BCSSAC, the Peace Commission, SSRF, UNDP and the international development community.
