International Youth Day march addresses youth issues
The South Sudan Ministry of Youth, Sports and Recreation held a march in Juba last Friday, from Juba University to the Dr. John Garang Mausoleum, commemorating World Youth Day. The event was supported by the UN Development Programme and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA).
The four kilometre march was accompanied by the South Sudan Police ensemble band. It drew participants from youth associations, the UN Volunteers, secondary schools, girl guides, boy scouts and representatives of sports clubs in Juba.
Addressing the gathering at Dr. John Garang’s Mausoleum, the Caretaker Minister for Youth, Sports and Recreation Mr. Makuac Teny acknowledged the challenges facing the youth today and urged them to embrace the culture of dialogue as a remedy.
“As young people, you cannot use violence to solve problems you are faced with in your various societies. But I would suggest you stick to the culture of peaceful reconciliation through dialogue,” Makuac advised. Makuac urged the youth to actively engage in sport activities and desist from anti-social behaviors including violence, drugs and alcoholism.
