First Cohort of 226 Inmates and Prison Staff Graduate from the Vocational Training Centre in Juba Central Prison

The National Prisons Service of South Sudan (NPSSS) feted the graduation of the first batch of 226 inmates and prison staff trained in eight trades at the Vocational Training Centre in Juba Central Prison. In a ceremony held at the Vocational Training Centre on Tuesday, 134 (10 female) inmates were honored for successfully completing the four-month training, which included theory and extensive practical sessions. Ninety-two (22 female) prison staff also trained in the eight specialties to serve as instructors for subsequent classes.

The United Nations Country Team in South Sudan, along with government leaders and other partners officially launched the Interim Cooperation Framework (ICF) at Juba Grand Hotel today. The Interim Cooperation Framework is the development strategy of the United Nations Country Team and functions as an interim framework in 2016 and 2017, which corresponds to the transitional period of the peace agreement.

The Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare, in partnership with the United Nations, held a two-day high-level dialogue to discuss the National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security. The dialogue featured national leaders from government, military, law enforcement, civil society, and the United Nations speaking on the theme, “Addressing Impunity on Sexual and Gender Based Violence in South Sudan.”
Peace Actors in South Sudan Launch Activities to Commemorate International Day of Peace

Peace actors from a wide-ranging coalition of civil society, international, and government organizations will host seven days of peace activities in commemoration of International Day of Peace. The activities begin today and will culminate in a march to the marquee ceremony in Juba on 21 September. This year the International Day of Peace will be celebrated in South Sudan by the national theme “Together We Can Heal The Nation”, as a call for every citizen to imagine, commit, and actively contribute to the vision of sustainable peace for South Sudan.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Associate Administrator, Tegegnework Gettu visited Juba, South Sudan this week. He met with leaders of the Transitional Government of National Unity (TGoNU) and development partners. His visit coincides with the successful formation of the TGoNU on 29 April following the signing of a peace agreement in August 2015.
