    Japan supports constitutional review process in South Sudan

    The Government of Japan has approved US $300,000 (29,475,000 Japanese Yen) to UNDP to support the constitutional review process in the Republic of South Sudan. The funding, provided through the Japan-UNDP Partnership Fund, will support the activities of South Sudan’s National Constitutional Review Commission in holding public consultations, especially with women, supporting media strategies to galvanise public participation, as well as the printing and distribution of the Transitional Constitution 2011.

    As 91 CSSOs leave South Sudan, Norway and UNDP sign new capacity enhancement agreement

    A two-day Exit Workshop for the second group of 91 Civil Service Support Officers (CSSOs) under the RSS/IGAD Initiative for Capacity Enhancement concluded sessions today at the Juba Bridge Hotel with the signing of a new extension agreement for a further two years between Norway and UNDP. The Exit workshop, which began on 30 November, had been organized to bid farewell to the group, as well as to look back at what has been accomplished, and share experiences based on the key objectives of the program.

    Rapid Prisons Assessment Report reveals dire prison conditions

    The National Prisons Service of South Sudan (NPSSS) launched the Rapid Prisons Assessment Report 2012 on Tuesday, 29 October 2013. The report and the accompanying photo book highlight the existing conditions of the prisons infrastructure and rehabilitation facilities and the urgent need for support to the Prisons Service.

    New Community Security projects handed over to Unity State

    The government of Unity State has officially taken charge of three police posts, 19 hand-pump boreholes and the seven kilometre long Guit Canal which will transport much needed water to the Naam River, saving cattle keepers in Guit County from a routine seven mile trek and holding the promise of calm in the area known for competition over access to water and pasture.

    2013 Human Development Report launched in Juba

    The South Sudan Recovery Fund (SSRF) handed over the new 85km Warrap-Akop-Pakur-Mashraar road to the Government of Warrap State on Monday 17 June in a ceremony held in Warrap town, Tonj North County.

    Warrap State Government to open new road

    On 17 June 2013, the Government of Warrap State with UNDP will open the new 85km, road which will link Warrap, Akop, Pakur and Mashraar communities. The road, started in December 2011, was identified by the Warrap State Government as a project that will contribute significant steps towards security and development for the communities.

    Major Infrastructure Handover to Lakes State

    UNDP’s Community Security and Arms Control (CSAC) project is organizing a major handover of conflict-sensitive infrastructure, including one police station, seven police posts, 12 boreholes, a prison courtyard, and solar power/radio communication equipment to the Government of Lakes State at 9.30 a.m. on Tuesday, 18 June 2013, at Abien-Ajok Police Post, Rumbek.

    The Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare will host a stakeholders consultative meeting to validate the National Social Protection Policy on Thursday 18 April 2013 at Juba Regency Hotel.     Governors’ Forum draws government officials together to discuss food security and pressing issues

    The Second Governor’s Forum will be 26-29 November 2012 at the Freedom Hall, Juba and will bring together the ten state governors, members of the Legislature, key ministers and development partners. Held nine times since 2006, this year marks the second time that key stakeholders will be meeting as an independent nation under the interim constitution.

    County Headquarters handed over to the Eastern Equatoria Government

    The South Sudan Recovery Fund (SSRF) handed over the newly constructed County Headquarters to the Government of Eastern Equatoria on Tuesday 30 October in Kapoeta South, Eastern Equatoria State. The Governments of the Netherlands, Norway and United Kingdom are the three donors to the SSRF.

    South Sudan to launch Crime Statistics Reports

    05 October 2012 – Juba: The South Sudan National Police Service (SSNPS) will release two Quarterly Crimes Statistics reports detailing crime rates, trends, and analysis for the last two quarters on Tuesday 9 October 2012 9:00am at Juba Grand Hotel. UNDP and UNPOL, with funding support from the Government of Japan, have provided technical support to the SSNPS at both the national and state level in the collection and analysis of crime statistics.

    National Customary Law Centre to open in Rumbek

    The CLC is the first institution of its kind in Africa and is expected to facilitate coordination between government and other stakeholders of the customary justice system. The CLC will also provide advice and training for all branches of Government on matters of customary law and serve as the repository for all relevant customary law research and reference materials.
