Dr. Kamil Kamaluddeen was received by Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon. Nhial Deng Nhial for the formal presentation of credentials, as newly appointed Resident Representative (RR) of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the Republic of South Sudan.
During the presentation, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday, April 8, 2019, the Minister of Foreign Affairs congratulated Dr. Kamaluddeen for his appointment to the new role of leading UNDP’s recovery and development work in the country.
The Minister reiterated the government’s full support to the development efforts carried out by UNDP in South Sudan. He looked forward to maintaining the fruitful relationship with the organization, especially in light of the critical transition from humanitarian to development support.
Speaking to the press after the meeting, Dr. Kamaluddeen acknowledged the Minister’s appreciation of the role of UNDP in the past, the present, and the future, adding that “UNDP needs to continue supporting this country both on the governance side and also on the development side.”
He further stated, “UNDP has been at the forefront of advancing the recovery and resilience agenda and works to consolidate peace and to build trust in people and institutions”.
Dr. Kamaluddeen described the future of South Sudan as “critically important”, adding that UNDP will continue to work with the government to rebuild and recover productive activities across the states and to ensure a strong people based and people-centred partnership that is nationally owned.
On the upcoming structural reforms, Dr. Kamaluddeen highlighted that UNDP is ready to work with partners in consistency with the National Development Strategy as well as advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Prior to this appointment, Dr. Kamaluddeen was UNDP Country Director in South Sudan; Liberia; and Ghana. Before joining the UN System, Dr. Kamaluddeen worked in the academia at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Nigeria, where he was a member of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Administration and Head of the Department of Management Studies.
Dr. Kamaluddeen holds a PhD in Economics from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS); Nigeria. He also holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Cross-Sector Partnerships from the University of Cambridge; the UK.
