    Raising Awareness, Decreasing Stigma

    During her last pregnancy, Alice became ill and visited her local hospital for testing where she found out that she had both HIV and tuberculosis (TB). Her husband had recently died and left her to care for their four young children on her own. While her father took care of the children, Alice received three months of treatment at her local hospital. Today, she is healthier, stronger and energetic.

    National Launch of the first Africa Human Development Report

    This report focuses on food security because without it development will not be possible. Currently, 218 million people or 1 in 4 Africans are suffering from food insecurity, including 55 million children. In South Sudan, 4.7 million people are a risk of food insecurity. Food insecurity is a serious problem that not only devastates families and communities but leaves a legacy with future generations, which impairs livelihoods and undermines human development.

    South Sudan Governors' Forum debates key challenges for the newly Independent Republic

    The South Sudan Governors' Forum convened this past week, bringing together the ten state governors, members of the Legislature, key ministers and development partners. Held nine times since 2006, this year marked the first time that key stakeholders met as an independent nation under the interim constitution.

    Women stand up for their rights in the new Republic of South Sudan

    Just a few days after independence was declared, the South Sudan Women Lawyers Association (SSWLA) issued a rallying call to supporters of women's rights, demanding greater equality and human rights for the women of South Sudan. The association congratulated President Salva Kiir Mayardit and all the South Sudanese people on attaining independence, however they also called on the government to step up their efforts in promoting and protecting the rights of women and girls.

    The striped flag of the Republic of South Sudan was raised outside the United Nations Secretariat building in New York on 14 July, shortly after the General Assembly admitted the new country as the 193rd UN member.
