    The queue outside the front gates of Bentiu State Hospital began in the early morning. Mothers held sick babies, the elderly rested against the wall, and together dozens of people waited for the gates to open. “Everybody comes here,” said the hospital’s surgeon, Dr. Patrick Njeru Nyaga. “Some travel for two or three days.”

    In January, the Government of South Sudan shut down its crude oil production after they failed to reach an accord with Sudan over oil transit fees. The decision was not an easy one for a country emerging from civil war and conflict, while just beginning the process of nation building.

    Six months ago the world celebrated the birth of a new nation on 9 July 2011. South Sudan’s hard-won independence was met with much fanfare. Less than a week later, on 14 July 2011, South Sudan was formally admitted into the United Nations General Assembly as the 193rd member state. South Sudan also joined the African Union (AU) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). The new nation took immediate steps to establish its new structures, including the formation of the South Sudan Legislative Assembly on 1 August 2011 and the formal announcement of the new Government on 26 August 2011.

    On 9 July 2011, hundreds of thousands of people gathered in Juba to witness the ceremony declaring independence for South Sudan.

    On 26th October the annual Governors’ Forum convened at the Legislative Assembly in Juba. H.E. Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny formally opened the event and delivered President Salva Kiir’s keynote speech in his absence, highlighting the importance of the Forum and thanking UNDP for their consistent support to the event.

    Sudan’s upcoming referendum, set to take place on 9 January 2011, will be a defining event in the country’s history. It will also be the last major milestone of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), bringing the interim period to an end in July 2011.
